The film won the Palme d'Or for Best Film at the Cannes Festival.
Why couldn't a sex worker desire true love? Anora (Mikey Madison) is still so naive that she has such a dream. When a young, rich, and wild Russian named Ivan (Mark Eidelshtein) orders her at her "home" club, she convinces herself that he is the one. Her life-changing decision will be preceded by a colorful series of sexual encounters, a few lines of coke, plenty of alcohol consumed, and a couple of days spent in Ivan's rented luxury house. And since the young man is quite a wild one, after a week of knowing each other, they fly off to Las Vegas to get married. Would they then live happily ever after? Not a chance. Ivan's parents are Russian oligarchs who sent their unruly son to America to escape the problems he caused back home in Russia. However, they consider their son's marriage to an American prostitute the biggest mischief he has ever done, and of course, they want to annul it. By any means necessary. But their new daughter-in-law is a tough girl who isn't easily intimidated and is ready to fight for her happy ending. Literally. "Audiences might have a problem with the title of the film because it might be hard for them to remember," says director Sean Baker, adding, "My main ambition was to make it in such a way that they would never forget it after seeing the film." He seems to be on track with this conviction, as confirmed by the Palme d'Or for Best Film from the Cannes Festival and exceptionally positive responses.
