Les Misérables, based on the book by Victor Hugo, has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Alain Boublil. The musical premiered for the first time at the Palais des Sports in Paris in 1980. Its English adaptation, written by Herbert Kretzmer, premiered five years later, on October 8, 1985, in London. The musical is still performed there today, making it the longest-running musical in the world. In 1987, it premiered on Broadway, where it won three Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book.
