Screening of the film Red Island at the French Institute cinema.
Madagascar in the 1970s seemed, at first glance, to be a paradise, especially from the perspective of a ten-year-old boy who escaped into the world of comics in his everyday life. But in one of the last colonies of the crumbling French colonial empire, the illusion of tranquility fades. Behind the safe walls of the French military base, social discontent is growing. The Red Island is also facing changes after which nothing will ever be the same again. The film Red Island had its world premiere in competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. The director of the film is Robin Campillo, who wrote the screenplay for the film The Class, which won the Palme d'Or. Campillo achieved his greatest directorial success with the drama 120 BPM. The film competed at the most prestigious film festival in the world, Cannes, where it won a total of four awards: the Grand Jury Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize for international film criticism, as well as the Queer Palm and the Francoise Chalaise Prize. The film 120 BPM was France's candidate for the Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
