CHARLESTON: A PRAGUE CLASSIC THAT HAS BEEN WITH US FOR AN INCREDIBLE 30 YEARS

Charleston, a legendary establishment in the heart of Karlín, is celebrating an impressive 30 years of existence this year. The restaurant, which has been enchanting guests for three decades with its faithful homage to the 1930s, is much more than just a gastronomic experience. It is a return to old Prague, when every establishment had its own character and customers could feel at home within them.

Charleston captivates at first glance with its unmistakable atmosphere. The two-story interior seems to be cut out of a Hollywood movie, but the style of the establishment is not just a superficial play for effect. Every detail, from the furniture to the music to the gastronomy, is well thought out. The restaurant owner, Pavel Papazov, deliberately preserves the patina of the tables and the floor: "I intentionally leave the tables and the floor a bit worn to evoke a sense of history," he says. He adds that the atmosphere is key for him: "It's not just about the food, but about the experience that pulls you into another time."

The musical experience plays a fundamental role at Charleston. Every evening except Sunday and Monday, guests can look forward to live piano music, which transports visitors to the thirties and adds a unique patina to their experience. The piano evenings are also free of charge, emphasizing the establishment's friendliness towards visitors. "Live music is the heart of our establishment. Without it, Charleston wouldn't be Charleston," says Papazov.

However, Charleston is not just about the atmosphere. The kitchen offers dishes made from fresh ingredients in accordance with the seasonal menu. The main attraction is the quarter-kilogram steaks, which guests can enjoy with various sauces. "Our steaks are prepared with the utmost care. We want every customer to leave satisfied," explains Papazov.

The establishment is popular for its lunch menu, romantic evenings, and special events. People rent Charleston for celebrations, often in period costumes. Those interested in such an event but unsure where to find similar attire can also receive help from Charleston in preparing for the party. In the summer, guests can enjoy the garden located in front of the restaurant. There are plans for a second garden in the courtyard, but it is currently under construction and hopefully will be ready this year.

Charleston is a faithful reflection of the past and a unique gem not only in Karlín but perhaps in all of Prague. Over its three decades, the establishment has won the hearts of many visitors, including famous personalities, although Mr. Papazov is reluctant to mention celebrities. "It's about the establishment presenting itself and not through famous faces," he says. However, he does not hide the fact that many celebrities regularly enjoy visiting Charleston.

We must also mention the sister establishment U Saní, focused on classics like svíčková or goulash. "At U Saní, we wanted to preserve the best of Czech cuisine but with a modern approach. Guests appreciate that they can enjoy food that reminds them of their childhood but in top quality," explains Mr. Papazov. Charleston and U Saní create a harmonious duo that satisfies lovers of elegance and authentic Czech flavors.

Charleston is proof that even in a constantly changing world, a business with a clear vision can not only survive but also thrive. After thirty years on the scene, with still full tables and loyal clientele, this "Karlín pearl" is definitely not coming to an end. You can now also find it on Instagram, where you can look forward to big news and celebrations of its anniversary this year. How many other restaurants can boast such a rich history? Charleston is definitely worth your attention – yesterday, today, and especially tomorrow.
