It was opened on September 28, 1931, and has been gradually expanding and modernizing since then. Today, it covers an area of over 58 hectares and houses over 5,000 animals from roughly 700 different species. The zoo has long been ranked among the best in the world and consistently ranks at the top of zoo rankings. In 2018, the renowned magazine Forbes even placed it among the top five best zoos in the world.
Indonesia and Africa
One of the main attractions here is the Indonesian Jungle pavilion, which faithfully replicates the environment of a tropical rainforest. Here you can see orangutans, gibbons, or crocodiles, as well as a rich flora typical for this region. Another exceptional pavilion is the African House, where animals typical of the African savannah live, such as giraffes, zebras, or rhinos.
Beloved Gorillas
Special attention is also deserved by the gorilla pavilion, which is home to lowland gorillas. Prague Zoo became famous mainly thanks to its gorilla male Richard and his family, who have become favorites of visitors. Another popular part of the zoo is the Valley of the Elephants, where you can admire Indian elephants in a spacious and modern enclosure.
Unique Attractions
The zoo also boasts unique exhibits, such as the Giant Salamanderium, where Chinese giant salamanders are bred - one of the largest amphibians in the world. Bird lovers should not miss the Sečuán Pavilion, where endangered Manchurian cranes and other species of Asian birds live.
Whether you are a family with children, an animal lover, or just looking for a beautiful place to walk, Prague Zoo offers an unforgettable experience for everyone.
