The young one suckles mother's milk without any problems, and the experienced mother takes excellent care of it. Since birth, this species, previously known as the marsh antelope, has long hooves and dewclaws that prevent sinking into the soft substrate. The western sitatungas live near rivers, lakes, or swamps and flee into shallow water in case of danger. Their hooves spread when they step, functioning similarly to snowshoes.
Sexual dimorphism is typical for western sitatungas; females are smaller, reddish, and hornless. Males, on the other hand, are brownish-gray and boast spiral horns and a long mane.
This traditionally kept species in Prague Zoo is usually found in the Water World in the lower part of the area. However, it is a warm-loving species of antelope, so our herd is kept in the background during the freezing months. With the arrival of spring, people can look forward not only to this New Year's calf but also to three additional females that were born over the last three weeks.
